To have vs. to not have

Use 있어요 and 없어요 for existence and possession.

Pattern

있어요 / 없어요

시간이 있어요. 시간이 없어요.

I have time. I do not have time.

How to use it

있어요 can mean there is, there are, or I have, depending on context. 없어요 is the negative form.

The thing that exists or is possessed often uses 이 or 가: 시간이 있어요 means there is time or I have time.

This pattern is very common for talking about time, money, plans, objects, and availability.

Examples

시간이 있어요.

I have time.

돈이 없어요.

I do not have money.

질문이 있어요.

I have a question.
